Fixed functional appliances (MARA, HERBST, FORSUS, Active-Sync, etc.) are designed to encourage growth or direct the growth of your lower jaw. They are believed to work by positioning the lower jaw forward while the muscles and bone grow to support the advanced lower jaw position. At first, it will feel awkward to hold your jaw forward while speaking and eating. Your teeth will not fit together well, and you will find chewing more of a challenge until you get used to it.
When indicated, use of these appliances is effective and impressive – at times avoiding the need for jaw surgery.
