SACRIFICES AND WILLPOWER… FOODS TO AVOID WHEN YOU HAVE BRACES

Braces are not put on with Super Glue! If they were, we could not get them off. In reality braces are very easy (and painless to remove). Consequently hard things break them loose and sticky things pull them off. It is IMPOSSIBLE to list everything to avoid to prevent breaking braces and wires… but we tried!

Foods to Avoid:

No No Foods for braces

STICKY NO!!!!

  • Roll Ups (nope)
  • Any Hard Candies (but I can just suck on them?? NO! it is bathing your teeth in sugary acid. NO BUENO)
  • Caramels (pulls them right off)
  • Jolly Rancers
  • Gummy Bears
  • Lolly Pops
  • Jelly Beans
  • Sugar Daddy (or babies)
  • Caramel Apples

Hard Stuff,,,  OF COURSE NOT!

  • Ice Cubes (NEVER!!)
  • Whole Apples (slice and dice!)
  • Whole Carrots (cut is just fine!)
  • Popcorn (the enemy of the orthodontist)
  • Hard Pretzels
  • Nuts (awwww nuts!)
  • Corn on the Cob (corn off the cob is GREAT)
  • Crusty Bread
  • Spare Ribs (cut meat off the bone)
  • Pencil Ends (really?)
  • Fingernails (nasty habit!)

BY FAR THE WORST THING TO EAT WITH (OR WITHOUT) BRACES ARE ACIDY FOODS AND DRINKS:

PH Levels of comon drinks. A healthy mouth has a PH of 7.5 or higher.

SOFT DRINKS ARE BAD BUT... IT IS NOT JUST SODA

How teeth look after time spent in soda

GATORADE AND SPORT DRINKS ARE JUST AS BAD (RED BULL, MONSTER ROCK STAR ARE EVEN WORSE!)

SPORT DRINKS ARE EVEN WORSE

White spots on teeth

They-ve been called "white spots," a "brace tan" among other things but no matter what you call it these are permanent markings on your teeth that never go away. These can be totally avoided by good hygiene and limiting acidic and sugary thigs in your diet. BUT THEY CAN OCCUR IN JUST A FEW SHORT WEEKS!!!! Unfortunately when your gums are overgrown and braces are on your teeth it is hard for the dentist or the orthodontist to detect the spots until after the braces come off.

PATIENT COOPERATION

PLEASE UNDERSTAND: Patient cooperation is the single most important factor in achieving a proper result and completing treatment on time. Insufficient wearing of elastics, Invisalign aligners, etc. or missing scheduled appointments will lengthen treatment time, adversely affect treatment quality and potentially result in additional costs. If you have any question to how your treatment is progressing, please call or email to discuss with Dr. DiGiovanni personally any concerns that you may have. We are here to help.
